For many non-Christians, it’s a joyful time that’s characterized by colorful eggs, Easter bunnies, and lots of delicious treats. Good Friday will be observed worldwide on April 7th. One of the most significant days in the Christian religion is Good Friday, also known as Holy Friday, Black Friday, or Great Friday.
Why is Good Friday celebrated? (The History of Good Friday)
It was on Good Friday when Jesus was crucified, and he set an example of love by sacrificing his life for others. This is the day when the Christian community remembers the cross of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is observed on Friday, the day before Easter Sunday. Christians all over the world celebrate Good Friday as a day of penance, sorrow, and fasting.
According to scholars, 2000 years ago in the Galilee region of Jerusalem, Jesus Christ gave the lesson of humanity, unity, and non-violence to the people. People were so influenced by the personality of Jesus Christ that they granted him the status of God. On this day, people fast and participate in prayer in the church. A procession is taken out in the church on this day. The Sunday following Good Friday is celebrated as Easter Sunday.
How is Good Friday celebrated?
On this day, people go to church and remember Lord Jesus. Some people mourn by wearing black clothes and also taking out processions. Candles are not lit and bells are not rung on this day. People make a rattling sound with wooden objects. As this day is considered a day of goodness, most people participate in social activities with enthusiasm. They plant trees and donate to the needy.
What occurred on Good Friday?
It is believed that on this day, Jesus Christ gave up his life to atone for the sins of humanity. He was cruelly mocked and beaten by Roman soldiers before being crucified on Calvary Mountain. Despite the somber nature of this day, it is referred to as Good Friday for various reasons. Some theories suggest that it is called “good” because of Jesus Christ’s holy act of sacrificing himself for humanity, while others believe that “good” in Good Friday actually refers to God.
Why is it inappropriate to greet someone with ‘Happy Good Friday’?
Good Friday is a highly significant day for the Christian community worldwide. However, it is not a happy occasion as it marks the day when Jesus Christ was crucified. Therefore, it is not appropriate to wish our friends a “Happy” Good Friday. Instead, we can send messages such as “Have a blessed Good Friday.” According to the Bible, God loved the world so much that he sacrificed his only son, Jesus Christ, to save humanity. On this day, Christians attend church services to remember Jesus’ sacrifice, and some even fast to observe the day of mourning and sorrow.
